Our Mission

Marylhurst Early Childhood Center believes that children are naturally curious, intrinsically imaginative, and thrive when learning is active and meaningful. Teachers are inspired by children to create active enriching environments that foster kindness, intellectual growth, and the joy of discovery. The Marylhurst School supports the development of a community that celebrates the unique contributions of our families, our school, and each individual child.

Our History

The Marylhurst School is steeped in the progressive model of education. At the vanguard of early childhood education, from its earliest design as the lab school on the campus of Marylhurst University, the school seeks to honor the developmental time of childhood. Mary Anne Doty directed the school’s move from campus to its current location in the historic Barclay School of Oregon City during the summer of 1986.

The school is built on the foundational philosphy that the work of the young child is to make meaning through play. Today, this philospy endures, expressed through the creative implementation of academic endeavor and the compassionate nature of social engagement.

At Marylhurst we strive to…

  • Create a collaborative learning community that celebrates individual differences and encourages children to take pleasure in their own and others’ intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth.
  • Nurture the development of compassion, understanding, a sense of responsibility toward others in the community, and strength of character, empowering children to express their beliefs and act upon their convictions.
  • Support lifelong learners who are instilled with a love of learning and an understanding that their education will always be unfinished.

Curriculum

The Marylhurst ECC curriculum is designed with the following philosophy:

  • Mindful teaching creates an intentional stand-alone philosophy grounded in respect for the social and emotional aspects of the developing child.
  • MECC believes a child’s inherent curiosity is best supported by their confidence in communication skills.
  • Our philosophical foundation is guided by each developmental stage; taking pride in honoring and stretching childhood play.
  • Curriculum development is organically seeded through open-ended listening and community enrichment. As a result, our programs are well-connected and celebrate families.

Our teachers are experienced educators who care deeply about each child and family.  Faculty Profiles are available for all staff members.

Schedule

The Marylhurst School recognizes that all children and families have individual needs, and provides a variety of class schedules to accommodate these.  Most classes are in the morning, with at least one afternoon class available.  The Threes have a 2-day or 3-day option, and the Fours have a 3-day or 4-day option. Kindergarten is 4 days/week, for 5 hours per day.  View class schedule.
